PINS (Persons in Need of Supervision)

The PINS (Persons In Need of Supervision) Diversion program serves children from the ages of 8 to 17 and their families, in collaboration with the Wayne County Probation Department and the Department of Social Services. Services are provided to at-risk youth who are determined to be eligible for the program by the Department of Probation. The program is mandated by the State of New York as a means of reducing referrals to Family Court for detention and out-of-home placement.

Specific services include in-depth assessment, bi-weekly home visits, regular contact with school personnel, and collaboration with other agencies. Case managers work with parents and schools to develop behavioral plans for all participating youth. Catholic Charities provides counseling for those children and families who are not receiving counseling from other sources.

As a result of the intervention of Catholic Charities, youth improve functioning, develop better coping skills, communicate more effectively and positively, and acquire impulse control. Progress is monitored by case managers and reviewed periodically through Family Assessment Service Plans.

Our PINS program is under the direction of Andrea Herbert, MSW, PINS Program Supervisor.
